When having an object of desire in his possession
or power expects to keep it as long as he lives, or according to
the nature of it as long as it lasts, or until he himself
chooses to part with, if without not being under an apprehension
of losing it, he finds himself in a sudden
bereft of it he feels on that account a powerful an unpleasant sensation
the intensity of which is in the value which which he ascribes to that same object
possesses in his eyes. In this case In a word the that which the individual
in question is in possession of he expects to retain, or what comes
to the same thing the value of it. This expectation being in a
sudden put an end, a the sensation of disappointment is one his the consequence.
Call this the uneasy painful sensation a pain of disappointment.
To minimize this pain the number and of

the cares of the Legislator. The principle by which the task
of minimizing the aggregate of pain experienced in this shape, call
it the Disappointment-preventing principle.
