Paper Mischief

We are now at a crisis which seems to
call for contributions of all sorts and for the sacrifice of personal considerations of all sorts from the well-wishers
to mankind: contributions of in wealth
to th where on the part where there is from those who have wealth to spare: contributions
in time and study intellectual effort, where education the
habits of attention reflection and reflection and study have been found
has been suitable, and directed either to the particular subject on
the carpet, or in any other way track to near to that
particular ground as to be capable of being made to bear
upon it with any degree of advantage.

Had reputation been my object – or even that
sort of personal satisfaction which results from
the consciousness pursuance of success in the pursuit of important interesting
truths – of the a successful exertion of intellectual
powers I should either have turned aside
altogether from the ground field of this inquiry altogether
or delay'd the completion of it and publication of
result to I know not how much more distant
period. But besides that the chance of being useful usefulness
depends in great measure so great a degree upon time, there is
another circumstance that may help to encrease
the ability of an even precipitated effort. In
a work that has contains a certain degree of useful truth
one error or two may by help to excite generate a degree
of attention which a work of more uniform
perfection would have missed. Among the interests thwarted by the enquiry: Errors real or apparent
may serve to do now engage in antagonists,
by presenting to their view the matter of triumph and
the means of refutation.
