matter of fact announced by it: and the nature
of the evidence by from which the truth of the existence of the
matter of fact so announced is inferred. proposition announced by it is collected.
Prices being a general term (meaning
the money sums of money given vendible for thought in
general) and no words importing restriction being
added to it, in by saying Prices have risen
so much in such a time – is meant in strictness
of speech, that this same ratio of increase
has taken place in regard to vendible articles
of all sorts without exception: – but, the degree
of uniformity thus indicated being contrary to
experience the utmost that can ever be really
understood by it is – that supposing the
quantities and qualities of the vendible articles
sold at the two periods had been the same,
it would have been found that the sum totals of the
moneys given with which they were purchased,
in the later period was in that ratio in the ratio in question (the
ratio of 2 to to the sum total of the moneys
with which they were purchased in the earlier
period: and accordingly, that if in the some articles
instances the encrease has was to less than to that amount,
in others it was as much greater.
