Paper Mischief

II. If then the rise of prices were an a result inseparably
connected with the encrease of wealth, and
although it were no more than in proportion to that
encrease, it would notwithstanding still be an evil, and an evil
of the first magnitude. – What shall we say then
if as far as the influence of the assigned cause is concerned, we find at the desirable undesirable result connected
only by mere accident with the undesirable desirable – and
therefore which is the point of real importance – that
a check may be given to the undesirable
result, without any diminution in the amount of
the desirable one?

In the production of this kind of mischief,
it is true, which shall not find the instrument
here in question (paper money) the
only agent, the agency operation of metallic money
in the same way line being powerful and indubitable.
But in the case of metallic money
we shall neither find the mischief though the amount of the mischievous agency may
in this particular point of view as great or greater,
yet the mischief if remediable in any degree, admitts
not of so sure or safe a remedy.
