Ch. Amount of the mischief by rise of prices
In looking for a point of time from whence
commencement of so much of the mischief as can
be conveniently subjected to calculation shall take its
date, I fix with pleasure on the commencement
of the present reign. It is on every point of view
entitled to be considered in an unbroken and
uncompounded mass, as well as in preference to
all preceding ones. It is a reig present of itself
a period a portion of time of sufficient magnitude for the purpose. It
presents a reign of almost unexampled length,
and of altogether unexampled prosperity and in
point of prosperity as well as copiousness of political
lights, altogether without example. On the
one hand we know the exported surplus of our wealth, and
the wealth imported in other shapes in return for it.
On the other hand we know the amount of our
annual burthens of the mass of debt charged
upon that wealth – the amount of the annual
burthens imposed, imposed for the discharge of it,
the produce of the different branches of revenue
appropriated to the purpose – all with a degree
of precision and minuteness altoge and publicity without example
in the history of this or any other state.† † Infrà. A mass of
injury entering and falling
with all its weight on
one sacred yet devoted
head.
