VI Rhetorical Rants
From the "Examiner" of Augt 8, 1830.
"We don't know how the coloured ribbons and blue brocade might have
affected our minds, had we not seen the following expressions of
attributed to Sir Frs Burdett, and which have given a mathematical
rather than a sentimental turn to one loyalty. Speaking of
his present Majesty, the Baronet declares his he has
"already done more acts of wisdom, justice, and kindness, to conciliate
the public affection, than all the Kings that had even sat
on the throne of England, from the time of the Revolution
down to the present moment."
This is worse than coloured ribbons or purple cachemere
— it beats blue brocade and silver blond gauge! Oh! the
poor dear Georges! Call to mind, reader, what William the
Fourth has along and then observe by what acts the merits
of all the Kings since the Revolution have been exceeded.
William has walked in Pall-mall, chatted to the people, reviewed
the troops, rode on the dickey of his coach (a great
virtue in a Monarch) restored Sir Robert Wilson to
his rank, indicated good humour and affability—
et voila tout. Of this sum of merits all other Kings
since the Revolution have fallen short."
