1830. July 30
Review

Nomography. At different times, as occasion has
served, Mr Bentham has been occupied himself in the putting
together material for an institute of this newly by him denominated
and newly observed branch of art and
science, belonging to the field of logic.

Object of it – showing how to the stile of writing
applied to the purpose of legislation those properties
which being desirable on the part of language in general
to what part soever applied to the field of thought and action, are
so in a particular manner desirable on every occasion
in which language is employed applied to a purpose of such
preeminent important.

Those observations of his have not yet been
brought into method. But in his Constitutional Code
Vol. 1 of which is lately published may be seen an
exemplification of that mode of legislative penmanship
which has partly been suggested, partly been suggested
by those same observations.

If reference had to those same desirable properties
if such they may be termed Mr Benthams stile an exhibition
in that same code is capable of being of use in the character
of a model, not less incontestably may Mr Broughams
as exemplified in this Book of his, in the character of a
beacon.

As to English Acts of Parliament, those distinguished by
name of a the Consolidation Act not excluded, to render
the style of them or well adapted as possible to the general purposes to
which they have at all times been directed, namely the promotion
of the interests of the lawyer class by the sacrifice of the interests of
all other classes, little remained for the art of men to do. To keep
it on its present footing would have been amply sufficient for the
purpose. But as to
Mr Brougham neither he or
his successes motives endeavour
nor his successes
been compared to
so humble and ordinary
a purpose. From his
learned pen may be seen addition contribution of no inconsiderable mean value to the existing chaos.
