Supposed Super
On an occasion such as this, a course that
would be taken by many a man, not to say by most
men, is – to deny all enmity – to deny all personal
motives – and so forth. No such irrelevant topic
shall we bring upon the carpet: against all such
divagations we are sufficiently warned by The
Book of Fallacies. A question of high importance
is – what Brougham is: a question of no importance
is – what we are: we will consent to be – for the purpose
of the argument – whatsoever the reader pleases. If
for the mere pleasure of punishing the informers by railing against
us, it be the pleasure of any man to defend and
if possible absolve and preserve from merited restraint
and disappointment a so highly culpable machinator,
– so it must be.
To speak less seriously: for we have need
of relaxation. This argument article may be wandered as an
argument in a suit, civil or penal. Name of the
suit, if civil, Public versus Brougham. Subect-matter
of it: Defendant's title to confidences: if penal,
Rex versus Brougham. Impeachment for High
crimes and misdemeanours. Judicatory, in both
cases, the Public Opinion Tribunal.
If Should he let the charge in the Bill be taken pro confesso – should he suffer judgment to go against him by
default, his not ours will be the blame.
