Brougham why thus attacked

1. Tu Brute?
Objection – why attack
Brougham when he
has always and so
long ago shown you
so much kindness
& friendship.

2. Tu Brute?
He who was the earliest
to speak of you
in the Parliament
in terms of veneration

3. Tu Brute?
Is it for you to
make this attack
upon him?

4. Tu Brute?
And that for no
better ground than
his preferring his
practical arrangement
to your theories.

5. Pro & Con weighed
Answer –
Before me a pair
of scales – in each
scale is an evil.

6. Pro & Con weighed.
In one side the effect
produced by this tract
on him the first in
rank next the blood
royal to whom all
that is learned in
the state is in a
state of constant
genuflexion.

Brougham – why thus attacked

7. Flea bite
To him the sensation
if an unpleasant one
can be but as a
fleebite.

8. Evils
On the per contra side

9.
First comes the evil
produced by the expense
and delay
the quantity of
money transferred
from the Creditors'
pockets to those of
lawyers.

10. J.B. not happily
On his virtues I
dwell with pleasure
– on his
failings with regret.

11. Lawyers love obscurity
A lawyer beholds
in every obscure
word a presage
of fees.

12. J.B. prefers Public
No man who
knows me can
expect me to sacrifice
public duty
to private friendship.

13. Disinterestedness questioned
To the plea of disinterestedness
this calculation
is a replication.

14. J.B. not
His esteem no object
of indifference to me.

Addenda

12. To J.B. Apology
To the public, whether
J.B. be ungrateful
or no is matter
of indifference.

13. For J.B. Apology
On J.B.'s side,
ingratitude now.

14. For J.B. Apology
The imputation of
ingratitude would
have been merited,
rather than that
evil so great to the
public should have
remained un-indicated.

15. For J.B. Apology
Diversion resorted to
by party astute on
such imputations.

16. Flea-Bite
Wound greater to my
feelings than to Brougham's

17. Brougham Feels 1. Universals 2 Knowledge
London University
and Useful knowledge
shew his inaptitude
for the organisation of
institution: and
mention of them is in
that respect particular.

18. This necessary
18. Necessary is the
reducing to its just virtue
his frame of
mind, to lessen the
force of his authority
in the event of its being
employed against
useful Insti measures
and Institutions who in or
out of Office join Ld Elden.

19. H.B. pugnatus
By different descriptions
of person Brougham
has been and be attacked
on different and even
opposite grounds –
as a
and Republicans
co-operate against
the courses
