1831 Oct 27

Extract from the Spectator, 22 Oct. 1831.

"Patronage of the New Bankruptcy Court. –

The official Assignees under the new act are to
be thirty in number. The examination of these
Assignees, the Chancellor, if he had pleased, might
have reserved in his own hands, but the patronage
has been frankly given away from
himself: commercial persons are better
qualified to judge who of their body is
fit for the task, than the highest legal officer
of the Crown; and to commercial persons
of the first character is the important duty
confided. The gentlemen appointed to make
the selection are – the Governor of the
Banks, the Governor of the East India Company,
Messrs John Martin, John Smith,
George Norman (the Bank Director), Lewis
Loyd, and four Commissioners of Bankrupt.
