☞ To Chadwick. Quere whether to insert this?

Of the light shining forth from this patronage, one of the fruits
(it should seem) is a late letter of O.P.Q.'s in which it being
addressed to his said Lordship, his said Lordship is declared
to be the greatest man that doth live, can have lived, ever will
live, or even can live; there or thereabouts, is the stile and
title he is blazoned with. Tot tibi sunt dotes virgo, quot
sidera cœlo,++ says an hexameter, which, by ringing the
changes upon its eight words is extendible to the length of
an entire poem: subject, the blessed Virgin: author, I
forget what member of the Society of Jesus: of the nosegay
so felicitously called the component flowers capable of
bearing the test of his pious brother's Gradus ad Parnassum,
every syllable of it. For the occasion may it not be – that
by the Parisian great political unknown, this exquisite little
bijoux was taken for the a model? merits for which if in
the present case the nature of things admitted of an adequate
acknowledgement, it might be – by substituting, to the
greatest number happiness of the greatest number which this poet in prose sometimes
deigns to patronize, the greatest happiness of the Lord
Brougham & Vaux for the proper and universal end in
view of every thing that is done. Still no more than a part of it has this
modern Junius with his – this man with the iron mask – one employed, of
the matter capable of being woven into the his panegyric:
in what I have here ventured to exhibit as above,
he may, if so disposed, find, and, in another letter or
two, employ, no inconsiderable addition to it. Should
no other per promise express or implied be ever
kept by his Ldshp his Lordship, still, a crown of glory,
thus resplendent, should not, how little so ever
more than what is strictly due, go altogether
unrequited.
