In the commerce of life at large — especially of political life
Money, factition dignity power, reputation — [not to speak of constant
ease and r vengeance] — the one all these modifications
of the matter of good — all these almost universally applicable
instruments of pleasure and — are
convertible into each other.
Without money in a certain quantity, nobody no man
can live. No one of those other ins modifications of the matter
of good, and [thereby] thence of reward can, which it retains and is confined to its
mere form — in a word untill it has been employed with
success in the endeavour to obtain money in addition
to or in lieu of itself, perform the function of money in
pursuing the necessary regular supply of the matter
of subsistence. But when sub in sufficient quantity
the matter of subsistence is once secured, whatsoever
quantity of the matter of subsist good is in any
given case required for the purposes other than subsistence
and equipment, and in particular for remuneration may
be given administered in any one of those shapes to the
exclusion of the rest: and, so far from creating an
additional a demand for an additional quantity of
the matter of good in any of those other shapes, supersedes
renders any the least quantity of it superfluous
