§.2. Abstract Fitness
Part 3 Proper Negative
Negative

(a)
Here are so many
violations of duty
by receipt of money
on false pretences.
Not but that judging
by custom, which
even with the clergy
has it's weight, in the
eyes of many, the
practice would not
be regarded as any
high pitch of iniquity.
p.+5

In case of sinecures
no man by accepting
them encreases the
evil — "Evil must
come, but woe be
unto him by whom
it cometh." This a
text of scripture,
but so many more
pointed texts are
neglected, that, it is
not to be expected
that any one should
regard this. p.+5

Unprofitable to
split lines of difference
according to
a standard not now
acknowledged, especially
as even if the
present sinners
repented, the sin
would not be decreased.
Insult from
his successors, ridicule
from the ruling
few, and even the
subject many, would
be the reward of
repentance. Inward
esteem or disesteem
not in a man's
power, but the outward sighs of esteem
might as well be expected
to be bestowed by his fellow theives on one
of their brethren, for restoring stolen goods. P.++5

§.1.
Part. 3 Negative Negative

Unprofitable to
dwell on sin where
repentance will
be useless — The quarter
where guilt is
most deep and
clearest, is that
where there are those
whose power might
remove it, but for
whose profit it is
preserved. P.+++5

Part 3 Negative Negative

Anti 1.
5 Pastoral idleness.

When to some amount
for want of exertion,
the duties of the
office fail of performance.
In the duties
of imperfect obligation
viz. those the neglect
of which is not legally
punishable, the
neglect will probably
be most frequent
p.6.

2
This rather of the
positive (it may be
said) than of the negative
kind. But
being so near a kin
to so many duties of
the negative kind,
and being capable
of being so denominated,
this seemed the
fittest place for them
and so for pastoral
ignorance. p.6.
