Ch 1
§.6. Church of England

§.5. Practice Scoticé

1

Nor without provision
judged sufficient (except

his collateral functions.
Of this further on. p.1

§.6. Practice Anglicé

1
Such as was the policy
of H. 8 & his daughter.
Such has been the
policy negligence or impotence
of their successors.
p.1

2
All this while England
had Scotland before its
eyes. But every true son
of the church had rather
be damned under Bishops
than saved under priests:
better be vicious & miserable
under the mitre
than virtuous & happy
without it. p.1

3
In no place can more be
taught than it will hold.
By return to Lords order,
it appears that the whole
number of Church of England
places of worship will not
contain half the number
of people capable of Church
-going. + [+]1 p.2

Ch. 7 Pay

4
Whether the whole or any
part of pay of teachers
of religion should be provided
by taxes — & whether
the efficiency of the institution
depends on the quantum
of emolument, will
be enquired elsewhere,
but it may already be
affirmed that if 10£ per
annum produce as much
service as 3000£, £3000
is more than is sufficient.
(These the extremes of English
church parish benefices)
— as per Bishop Porteus.

A proposition being laid
down, that all benefices
under £50 were insufficient,
about 17— Queen
Ann gave up first fruits
to contribute to supply the
sufficiency, but so great
is the deficiency, that on the
most sanguine calculations
more centuries than one
must elapse before the object
will be accomplished
by the above provision
— If in quality or quantity
the instruction be deficient,
the more the
deficiency, the less the regret
at deficiency of remuneration.

Whether such consolation
be desirable, reserved
for another head. p.3.
