Ch. 9. Power
§.1. Abstract fitness

§.1. Abstract fitness
Part. 3. Misch. 1. Perfection

18
If instead of being confined
to candidates, for
the profession &c in
question, it were imposed
on all men or
a certain class, without
distinction, this would
be persecution afflictive
in proportion
to the penalty on non-
compliance. p.6.

19.
Shewn supra the
abhorrence of liberty
from subscription in
the class in question.
This abhorrence, and
propensity to inflict
punishment are under
limitations as
above the same thing
under other names.
p.7.

§.1. Abstract fitness
Part 4 Misch 2. Depredation

1
Wealth, power, & reputation
promote the
growth of each other.
[Wealth] obtained in
proportions exceeding
what is conducive
to the due exercise
of the truth, is depredation.

2.
The degree of sacerdotal
depredation, before
the Reformation
well known. All
men's personal property
and about 1/3 of
the immoveable property
of the country had
found its way into
their hands, in England.
In Scotland
½ of the last-mentioned
kind of property.
p.1.

3.
Though influence of
understanding was
the great cause of
this, yet the power
here in question is
not inoperative.
p.1.

4
Happily except in
minute remnant
Anglice this faculty
of making religious
fear an instrument
of depredation no
longer exists. No
hope of extension it
existing, exertions are
confined to preservation.
But for this
remnant, it would
not be entitled to a
place here. The depredation
finds its
support in religious
prejudices influence but the
hold on it by the
priests is precarious.

§.1. Abstract fitness
Part 5. Misch. 3. Abstraction

1
Supposed to be shewn
supra, that the due
exercise of power,
except in very limited
quantity, cannot
find a sufficient quantity
of time & attention
without trenching on
the pastoral duties.
(Ch. Duties and Qualifications.)
p.1.

2.
If time be insufficient
for the pastoral duties
and for the exercise of
power, it is easy to
choose between them.
Power on it's own
account, a source of
pleasure. Pastoral
duties only from the
respect looked for in
due exercise of them
— and from hopes of
future reward.
p.2.

3
Among so many other
mischiefs the mind
can scarcely be confined
to such a consideration
as the
present. Of itself it
could not form a
sweeping objection.
For, though A might
not have time — B
might. p.2

4
Power even with the
adjuncts temporal &
so abstract, that
specifications are necessary.
Take ex. gr.
power 1. Of tythe owner.
2. Landlord — 3 Bishop
4 Justice of the peace.
The evils in these
cases a sample of
those in others.
p.3.

5
Distinction supra
between power attached
to the office sacerdotal
office & do conferred
on the individual —
Bishop example of
the former case — Priest
Justice of the Peace of
the latter.

Part: 5. Misch. 3. Abstraction

6
One simple point
should be looked to. viz.
Does the office by
accident attached to
the priestly functions
require absence from
the districts which
the priest in question
serves. If yes — this
a symptom of monstrosity
not evident
in the other case.
p.4
