§.1. Abstract fitness
Part. 6. Misch. 4. Pride

1
IV Pride so inseparable
from power, that the
proposition that any
power conferring
office, encreases the
sentiment of pride —
will scarcely be denied.
p.1

2
The effect (among others)
of pride is expectation
of respect, disappointment
of which produces
more or less irritation.
If this were the
only effect, it would
be good rather than
evil, as appetite of respect
would naturally
encrease exertions in
the way of serviceable
labour. p.1.

3
Respect however is the
more soothing, the
higher the quarter
from which it flows —
the greater the power,
the higher the quarter
the priest can obtain
it from. The more
his gratification
from this source
the more he is elevated
above those to
whom he may be
of use. p.2.

4
Power operates in this
way with greater
efficiency when conjoined
with superfluity
of pay — little
more with factitious
dignity. Elevated in
this manner above
it is beneath a
priest to teach the
gospel to the poor
(save now and then
in great ceremony)
to visit the poor who
stand most in need
of visitation in short
to have any thing
to do with them
except as a work of
supererogation to dole
out indiscriminating
alms. p.2.

Part. 6. Misch. 4. Pride

5
When invested with
a Bishoprick the
house of this pretended
teacher of the
lowly religion of
Jesus becomes a palace
his house seat a
throne. Should such
a personage hold
familiar converse
with the dirty poor?
Better do nothing!
He accordingly governs
or pretends to
govern the inferior
teachers of whom
many are, by superfluity
of pay incapacitated
like himself,
while the duty
is tossed down to
others who imitate
as closely as they
can the indolence
and pride of their
superiors. p.3.
