As to disrespect, the
more apprehensive
a man is of receiving
demonstrations of it
himself, or seeing his
friends receive it
the more anxious
will he be to set
to work for his protection
those instruments
which the ruling
few have been careful
to provide.

Suppose a first criminal
judge — the administrator
of libel —
to be conscious of being
justly an object of
abhorrence; and, spite
of arbitrary power
to have retaliated on
himself the insults
he uses towards the
defenceless — Such a
man despairing of
natural respect
must consequently
value factitious dy at
the utmost.

If it depended on his
merit would he hate,
— factitious dignity
will be extolled & respected.
Idolatry for applied
to real men, title
to worship constituted
by height of place a
greate character — a
person in a high situation
— & the
temerity of him who
ascribes unfitness to
such person — visited
with unrelenting
