II Topics
Ch. 11 or 12 Responsibility
§.2. Earliest practice

1

§.2. Earliest practice

1
In the days of Jesus,
his church was an unestablished
one. So till
Constantine. p.1

2
Under the head removal,
is shewn that
correspondent to power
of removal, on the one
hand is a degree of responsibility,
on the other
the maximum of which
is this one species of punishment.
p.1

3
This the only condition
compatible with a non-established
Church.
p.1.

4
From the origin of
the religion, the mode
of responsibility would
naturally undergo
a gradual, & at length
a complete change.
At present, between
the instructor and
his pupil, is a reciprocal
influence, on one
part, the influence
of understanding,
on the other, the influence
of will, by
means of the purse
p.2

5
In the days of Jesus
was no such reciprocality.
The influence
of understanding, was
on his side, at it's maximum,
added to the
influence of will supposed
to be derived from
above. p.2.

6
By his immediate successors,
the coercive
power was exercised
more forcibly than
by Jesus. p.3
(a)
Ex. gr. Annanias and
Sapphira. p.3

7
In course of time, the
coercive power naturally
ceased, and the
influence of understanding
as the teachers
receded from the source
overturned unless kept
up by imposture.

§.2. Earliest practice

8
In the progress of the
ages, both powers
received an unnatural
increase.
At the reformation
they again declined
till at present all
that remains is (as
in an unestablished
Church) the influence
of understanding
leaving do of will
by means of the purse
with the pupils.
p 3.
