I Principles
Ch. 2. Causes of Inefficiency
5
§. VIII. Benefice-changing &c
1
Whatsoever service be expected
by the parishioners
from their priest, it is
an essential condition
that he should have no
further prospects.
p.1
2
The longer he lives among
them, the better
he knows them, p 1
3
— and the more essential
to him to gain
their affections. p.1
4
Ambition, however
laudable elsewhere,
only pernicious here.
p.1
5
The English system adverse
to the utility of
the clergy, beneficed or
not. — p.2
6
A large proportion of
the beneficed ones are
exposed to ambition ambition
& swayed by it
in their plan of life.
p.2.
7
Prelacies — dignified
sinecures, valuable
& more valuable livings
kindle & keep alive
the flame of ambition.
p.2
8
Here instead of the
useful qualities of a good
parish priest, they acquire
the arts of obsequiousness,
to worm themselves
into a patron's favour.
p.2
9
Thus he who would
under another system
have been a good teacher
of the many, becomes
a sycophant to the few;
corrupted by them &
in his turn their corruptor.
p.2
10
Many beneficed, but
all the unbeneficed
clergy alias Curates are
in this case. p.3
11
To the mischiefs of an
excess of emolument
must be added this
bad effect — its tendency
to allure an excess of
competitors. p.3.
§. VIII. Benefice-changing &c
12
Like a lottery with
a few large prizes,
a large proportion of
the adventurers are
in a state of indigence.
p.3
‖
13
Of all these inconveniences,
nothing beyond
the reach of remedy
— in the Scotch
Church, a remedy
found for all of them.
p.4.
Scotice. 14
1. No Bishops, Deans,
Canons, Prebends
or Archdeacons. p.4.
15
2 The value of the
living so nearly equal,
as to be no cause
for a wish for change.
p.4
16
3 Preferment unknown,
& its offspr
offspring. —
ambition if any, all
innoxious. p.4
17
In the 4 universities,
the Professorships
more valuable than
the most valuable
benefice — & of course
well filled. p.4
18
The consequence —
The man who thinks
he has any particular
talent, selects as
an object for his ambition
such or such
a Professors chair,
where it may be of
use.
