Ch. 16. Simony

or 7
Thus far Dr Paley
as if the practice of
the rector or vicar
turning the whole of
the duty to an "indigent
stipendiary" & pocketing
all the pay save
the stipend to the Curate,
were not become
general. By the offence
in question, the pay
could not be reduced
to less than what a
curate would receive
from an incumbent,
and rarely so low, viz.
never unless
where the tythes, payable
by the patrons
will suffice for such
reduction p.11

or 8
This expedient does
not extend to any
one but the patron.
The possible reduction
is limited by the
amount of the property
in the parish in
question in the patron's
hands.

Where all the parish
is the patrons, the reduction
cannot be carried
further than as
above — where the patron
has no property
in the parish, no reduction
can take
place. p.12

or 9
By Rectors &c. this reduction
is notoriously
effected, & men being
used to it, it is scarce
ever blamed. p.12

or 10
If salvation of souls
had in the mouth of
the clergy any meaning,
whatever regard to that
object is expected from
a lay patron, a greater
should naturally be
expected from a clergyman
& deficiency in
the latter case should
excite severer censure
— The archdeacon's regret
is reserved however
for lay patrons deficiency. p.12.

or 11
If any thing in the
whole system were
good enough to be
capable of being spoiled,
no arrangement
could be more pregnant
with abuse
than this — Should
it have place to the
extent it is susceptible
of, the effects
would require for
their extraction
more pains than
the subject is worth.
p.14

or 12
If it be assumed that
the office is useless —
a mass of income
charged with the performance
of ceremonials
which it matters not
how they are perf
performed, or if at
all — it will not matter
who are the possessors
of it, what certainty
of continuance
they have, or under
what qualifications
they hold it. p.14
