Ch. 18. Schism
§.1

§.3

1

§.1

1
Under a tolerably enlightened
government
such as England, & even
other countries have
arrived to, the relation
schism or seperatism
bears to true religion
will be seen to be of
the most amicable
kind. p.1.

2.
To promote good
morals, to serve as
an index & measure
of the sensibility to,
and extent of, the
religious sanction,
is among it's effects.
p.1.

3.
Instead of being in
this way, a good to
religionists, & in particular,
establishmentalists,
especially
of the English Church
& to those influenced
by them, it has been
held to be an evil
to be deplored. The
cause of this evil
& the consequent
language, lies not
deep. p.1.

4.
In matters of religion
where disagreement
concerns doctrines, it
is called heresy — where
discipline — schism.
p 2

5.
When A. is separated
a certain distance
from B. it is generally
allowed by mathematicians,
B. is equally
distant from A.
p.2

5
Socus among politicians
and still further
otherwise among
Religionists. — Sum
fixt — the standard
— the dissenter the
aberrator — This the
language of the
few to the many;
with few exceptions
such the language
of him who dares use
it, to the dissenters
from his opinion, &
thence the resisters
of his will. p.2.

§.2.

1
Of competition in
general, the influence
is no secret — in
no case where it is
applicable, would
the advantage be
doubtful but for
sinister interest.
p.1.

2.
With the united force
of reward and punishment,
it acts
in favor of good
management —
success is reward —
miscarriage — punishment.
p.1

3
By it, service is screwed
to it's highest pitch
— the expence and
burden of reward
minimized. p.1.

4
Conceditor — in so
far as schism produces
ill will, it
is mischievous — not
because schism is
mischievous, but
because ill will is
so p 2

5
However the matter
was in former times
between two sects
neither of which
claims any power
of over the other, no
such ill will has
place — at least, not
so much as to produce
any sensible
mischief.

In this case, the
good produced, is
pure. p.2.

§.3.

1
As a cause of piety,
and in so far as piety
is a cause of them —
good works — schism
has been seen operating
1. on the seperatists
& 2. by reflection on
the establishment.
p.1

2
As an evidence and
measure of piety,
its operation is confined
to one of these
two sides viz. the
seperatists p.1

3
On this side, as evidence
of piety, its force is
incontestible. Setting
aside casual action
of special interests (a)
by any one who congregates
with a
non-established
church, proof of
piety is exhibited
which by a member
of an establishment
as such, is not exhibited.
p.1.

4
In the instance of the
active and leading
men, love of power
may be supposed
to have weight — but
these are comparatively
few — while the
contribution of each
individual (toward
the support of the
teacher,) affords in
the ratio of his means
a proof of his sincerity
which exists
not in the use of
Churchmen.
Vide Quarterly Review
Penny contributions.
p.2.

5.
Conceditur there is a
difference between the
case of a proselyte to a
non-establishment,
and that of a person
bred up in it. By whatever
prejudice or fashion
a man is kept
in an establishment,
so (it may be said)
will he be kept in a
non-establishment. p 3.
