Ch. 18. Schism, Utility of
§.4. Horror Cause
3
12
Even among
Protestants, especially
Anglicé, in the early
days of the Reformation,
the horror of schism, had
a cause not at present
existing. p.5.
13
In those days, it was
a moot point, whether
Episcopacy or Presbyterianism,
should be
established, — It is not
natural that in this
contest, all ill will
should have been on
one side. While the
Episcopalians laboured
to exclude Presbytery —
it is not to be wondered
if the Presbyterians
tried to exclude Episcopacy.
If an unprejudiced
eye even now
see the mischief of
Episcopacy, a fortiori
would it then? p.5
14
In those days, aversion
from difference of opinion,
was strengthened
by a principle of self
preservation. p.7.
15.
What apprehension
can now be entertained
from the
seperatists, who are
computed at but
1/5, of the whole body,
& many of them,
more widely seperated
from one another,
than from the
establishment? p.7
16
In Ireland, the once
established, now separatist
church, has
never consisted of
so few as 2/3 of the people.
Yes, spite of all the
oppression exercised
by the minority, what
have they had to fear
from the quondam
established church!
p.7.
17
Not in fear, but in
antipathy, may be
seen the most efficient
cause of the Anger of the
established church
and particularly the
clergy, towards seperatists.
p.8.
18.
Cowardice a mask
tyranny is not ashamed
of, rather than
low assistance. p.8
19.
Conceditur. Interest
begotten prejudice
may have had more
or less share. From
Elizabeth to the present
time, heresy and
schism, two of the
plagues prayed against.
N. B. This an example
of the virtue of
fixt forms, as encreasing
ill will towards
men. p.8.
20.
Is the encrease of separation,
a just ground
of apprehension to any
one? — No — p.9
21.
To the beneficed
clergy — it is from
the unwise zeal of
those who worship the
phantom church
without knowing
what they mean, that
any thing is to be apprehended.
p.9
22.
From no class, have
any, the most pampered
of these functionaries
any thing to fear,
so firmly fixt in the
minds of reformers in
general are the maxims
by which present
interests in
possession and expectancy
secured. p.9
23.
For their prejudices,
if from any quarter
they have to fear from
those honest members
of the establishment who
no longer approve
the abuses which extinguish
it's good, and keep
alive it's bad effects p.9.
