As a pretext religionists
assert that the offence of
impiety is levelled against
God. — p.9
2
This utterly groundless
God never had a contemner
but in a mad house.
No man says he believes
not what God has said,
but that he does not
believe God has said so.
This no contempt of
God, nor (but by accident)
of man — but men in
power pretend to see
contempt as a pretence
for punishment. p.9
3
The Atheist no contemner
of God. To contemn
a man I must believe
him to exist. Suppose
the case that of a man
who deceived by false
reports supposed an
earthly potentate
whom he served dead
— If in a man's expression
of opinion
there be offence, it is
a collateral offence.
But man construes
contempt of himself
into that of the Almighty
as a pretence for
anger. p.10
4
The improbity imputed
by religionists as a pretence
for anger, exists only in
their minds heated by
passion. p.11.
5
No man contemns God,
or disbelieves his word.
In disbelief or in contempt
ut supra man alone
the object of it. The unbeliever
supposes some
men to be deceivers,
others to be deceived. — As to
different persuasions —
one religionist infers
this from the text — another
that. p.11
6
"To me these propositions
appear true — therefore
you must hold them
to be so." This paralogism
the source of all religious
tyranny & the road
to all persecution. — p.12.
7
Various the phrases
to disguise this plan
of tyranny. — Jure
Divino the most
notorious. At the bottom
Jure Divino is tyranny
to the obsequious, to the
resisting, extirpation
To Catholics — Catholicism
is Jure Divino. Inference
protestantism suppressed
or protestantism extirpated.
p.12
7
Where power is wanting
malice would be the
consequence. — Difference
of opinion naturally
creates enmity.
Whence this comes, will
be a separate enquiry
— that it is so is unhappily
indisputable.
