II. Doctrine
Ch. Bond
Proper Bond, Declaration,
with Engagement.

3

Proper Bond, Declaration
with Engagement

16 or 1
From what is capable
of having place pass
to what is most proper.
Here the question is encumbered
with existing
arrangements. Abstract
fitness can scarcely be
taken into consideration.
Of no part of the subject
can any just decision
or so much as consideration
have place, without
taking into account the
inconveniences of change
p 1

16* or 1*
Necessity of such bond
shewn, what should
be its nature? p.1

17 or 2
Answer — 1. Declaration
of opinions — 2. Engagement.
3 — Both together.
By declaration, present
union is provided for,
by engagement future.

18 or 3
Of the declaration, the
necessity has been already
shewn by shewing the
necessity of the above
bond. p.1

19 or 4
The present thus provides
for itself. for the future
provision remains to be
made. p.2.

20 or 5
Of Future opinion
promise cannot be
made, without promising
what is neither
practicable nor proper.
Persuasion is not at
the immediate and
absolute command
of the will p.2.

Proper Bond, Declaration
with Engagement.

21 or 6
Even if it were, so to
command it would not
be proper — consistent
with right judgement —
— unless man were infallible.
Man not infallible,
it would be an engagement
immutably
to adhere to error. p.2

22 or 7
But though actual
adherence is not practicable,
false declaration
of do. is: but an engagement
to that effect is
being an engagement
to persevere in a
course of wilful falsehood
The immorality of which
is as the importance of
the subject. p.3

23 or 8
For the mischief of this
sort of misrepresentation
see infrà: Meantime
this view of the falsity
may serve for presumptive
proof of the immorality.
p.3.

24 or 9
An engagement to commit
falsehood ought to be
considered as void: i.e.
as not binding; the
observance of it being
an act of immorality:
the breach not: the
sole immorality consists
in the taking it. p.4
