Vitanda Mendacity

Church — Established
Vitanda — Mendacity

1
Essential property of an
Established Church —
its Ministers paid by
money supplied by the
powers of Government.
p.1

2
If to the receipt of this
be necessary declaration
of certain opinions, with
or without engagement
to inculcate them, hence
a temptation to commit
falsehood.

3
To the securing permanence
to the effect expected from
such declaration, an
engagement always to
retain those same opinions
as necessary. p.1

4
Circumstances in which
in this case depends the
probability of mendacity
1. the extent 2 the particularity,
of the opinions
so inversely the security
against such mendacity.
p.2

5
For such narrowness and
generality a reason
this of peculiar force
in the case of an established
Church. p.2

6
3. Opinions erroneous,
probability of mendacity
is as their absurdity
when once exposed:
security inversely.

7
4 Given extent, particularity,
and absurdity,
probability of mendacity
will be as the
magnitude of the temptation
— i.e. as the aggregate
mass of reward so

5. This magnitude being
given, it is as the inequality,
i.e. thence as the magnitude
of the greatest
loss. p 3.

9
Reason — Value given,
efficiency is greater, the
greater the magnitude,
though at the expence
of certainty.
Example, — Lotteries.

10
If not so in all breasts
it suffices if in most or
many p.3

6. Further circumstance
by which the probability
of such mendacity is
increased. the lustre,
i.e. the dignity and
power added to these high
lots. Awe struck by this
lustre, the disposers
of the power of the popular
sanction fail to
apply it to the repression
of such mendacity:
they accept the assurance
of veracity, on the
credit of such imposing
authority in preference
to their own judgement.
p.4

12
Free from all such
temptation and danger
is the condition of a
non-established Church.
