Steps leading to the above
conclusions.
1. Subject of operation
2. Modes of do. p.1
2
Persuasion and opinion
(synonymous) the designations
of the subject of operation —
p.1
3
Belief also nearly synonymous
to these — but having
an opposite belief disbelief
by which is signified
when the question is existence
or non-existence, persuasion
&c. on the negative side, thence
belief only synonymous to
persuasion &c. on the positive
or affirmative side.
p.1
4
Faith a substitute for persuasion
when the subject
is matter of fact as to
religion ex. gr. that Jesus

such is the meaning of

Unbelief and disbelief
the two opposites to Belief
— Unbelief a want of
persuasion
Disbelief a contrary do.

disbelief never for belief.
Unbelief sometimes included
in disbelief, never
in belief. p.3.

self deceptive process we
may account for a phenomenon
scarcely natural
authority a mass
of circumstantial evidence
applicable to all purposes
— Suppose in this
case all other evidence
were in disproof, it
would be kept out of sight
and thus an overwhelming
mass of evidence
is uncontroverted before
which the strongest minds
have bowed. p.
