Merit has been ascribed
to the entertaining a
persuasion on the subject
in question as the intensity
of the persuasion —
E contra demerit attached
to him who does not
entertain it. p.1.

When merit is thus attributed
to faith, some
imposing adjunct is
attached to it. Ex. gr.
faith in the word of God
— Jesus &c. p.2

What men seem not
aware of is, that be
the author of the proposition
or its subject
what it may, the immediate
ground of persuasion
is a man's
self-assurance p.2

As to the proposition
in question, the subject
of faith is — 1. Some
portion of the bible —
or 2. Some formula/formulas
expressive of inference
or inferences drawn
therefrom — In the 1st
case the belief is indigenous
— in the 2nd
adoptive. The 1st case
supposes confidence in a
mans own judgement —
the 2nd in some other
man's judgement also
