II Doctrine
Ch. Persuasion
§. Power over Perf
Recep
Deceptitious reason
when generally applicable
composed of fallacies of
which a collection may
be made — when specially
applicable, of false
evidence or false special
arguments. p 5.
Enslavement of the
press the only thing
wanted to complete
the enslavement of
the mind as above by
force.
— A man is induced
to keep his mind shut
against arguments
é contra By enslaving
the press they are effectually
kept out of the
way. p.6
Thus spiritual &
temporal tyranny
would flourish and
get credit for upholding
truth by crushing
it. p 7
This instrument being
so powerful to do
evil, is it not an ill
act to discover its potency?
p.7
Yes if the ill disposed
few needed the information.
p.7
No such ignorance exists.
To administer poison its
effects only need to be
known — not its composition
&c.
No assistance given
them by the information
here communicated
p.8
But to assist the
subject many to defend
themselves, this
information is useful
and well used may
be a means of self-
preservation.
Thus a poison being
analyzed, its mischief
is not encreased but
perhaps diminished.
p.8
Too much to say that
divulgation is defeat
of all the ruling few
but it is the first step
towards it. —
The practical inference
easy — ill formularies
by which force
is employed to work
persuasion or declaration
of do on points
of doctrine are enemies
of your well being, &
thence are those who
promote them. p.9.
