1 Jany. 1812. 12
Church

II. Doctrine
Ch. 2. Persuasion &c

6

§.1. Abstract fitness
Pt. Causes — Improper motives Power over Persuasion

1
Such the mischievous
fruits of the impositions,
what were the
motives of the imposery?
— what the advantage
to themselves the prospect
of which determined
them. p.1

2
The motives have been
too powerful — the advantages
too manifest.
p.1

Power over persuasion

3
From A. who has
considered the subject
you get, not credence
but a false declaration
of credence.

But B. C. & D. do not
know the falsity of
the declaration, so thus
the supposed state
of A's mind influences
their minds
& produces adoptive
belief. p.1

4
Having purchased
of A. an insincere declaration,
something
between a sincere &
insincere one is procured from B. C. D.
p.2

5
Thus by these crafty
tyrants, a cloak for
their dishonesty &
a justification of their
tyranny is manufactured.
— Could a
constant succession
of 10 000 pious, right
reverend, very reverend
& reverend persons
have been deceived,
or deceivers, then how
can you or any body
tax me with insincerity
or error in my
profession? p.2

6
And ye children
of perversity, how can
you oppose your judgement
to that of the
whole church. p.2

§.1. Abstract fitness
Pt. Causes — Imp motives Power over Persuasion

7
Ah, hypocrites!
what is your faith to
that manufactured
without ink & paper
on the banks of the
Ganges? How many
of you would throw
yourselves under the
Chariot wheels to
seal your faith with
your voluntarily
offered blood? p.3

Power over Persuasion

8
Thus by punishment
& reward, or either,
faith is manufactured
with as much certainty
as the moving manufactories
of it
are kept in motion
by rice or potatoes.
p.3

9
And thus a cloak
for folly; a justification
for wickedness
may by the ruling
few, to the oppression
of the many be produced.
p.3.

10
Thus after or before
the production of faith
in the breast of thousands
by miracles, it has
been produced in
millions without
any. — p.4

11
And thus it is —
to come to motives
in close contact with
human breasts —
opulence, power, &
dignity completely
undeserved, the
reward of holy vileness
— & by Gods blessing,
if prayer
can draw it down,
perpetuated. p.4
