II. Doctrine
Ch. Persuasion
§.1. Subject tests inferences

4

Subject of persuasion
§ Texts X Inferences.

1
Articles subscribed,
and creeds pronounced,
consist of an assemblage
of propositions. p.1

2.
The Bible being the
acknowledged source,
and among Papists Protestants,
the only acknowledged
source, the propositions
must be extracted,
or diduced from the
sacred text. p.1

3.
Assent to any propositions
extracted
simply from the text
has never been required
Such security against
error, would gratify
no dissocial passion
or sinister interest,
find no recusants
— oppress no adversaries
p.1

4
Applied to inferential
propositions, it is
applied to an application
of the Act of criticism
p.1

5
So long as the intellect
admits of improvement,
this art must
be applied with greater
advantage. p.6

6.
The tenor of the articles
in question was,
drawn upo Anno 1562
temp. Eliz. a few
years after the bloody
reign when to deduce
from the sacred text
exclusively an indigenous
persuasion was
a mime worthy of death.+
p.2.

7
Faith in inference
made by men is faith
not in God but in men.

B Faith in inferences drawn
Ao 1562, is faith of the more the unexperience
in the wisdom of the less unexperienced
— of the more learned
in the learning of the less learned
of men living under a comparatively
free and popular
government is
under the intolerant and
cruel overbearing Despotism.

Subject of persuasion
§ Texts X Inferences.

7.
As to any subjects, that
criticism was scarce
past its infancy, that
on inferior subjects,
astronomy, chemistry &c.
scarce a clear idea was
to be found, the most
bigotted ancient worshipper
will acknowledge.
Applied to
this most important
and difficult subject,
upholders of creeds &c
insist on belief &
& confession, that in
the fair dawning
years, that succeeded
utter darkness, this
art shot up to such
a pinnacle of perfection,
that punishment
is warranted
against those who
reapply human
judgement to the
subject. p.3.

8
Numerous stands made by
Government at the Reformation
at different stages in the track
of reform. Scotland went
in this track beyond England.
The stand made in
England Ao 1562 assumed
to be at the point of perfection
and the only one endurable.

+ This must not be employed
till indigenous
& adoptive have been
explained.
