II. Doctrine

§.1. Abstract fitness or §.6. Scoticé
Part Subscriptions antichristian

1
The temporal being
the only point of view
in which religion is considered
here, it may
be a question whether
the system of opinions
contained in the creeds
as above, be entitled to
the name — Christianity
— and the professors
— Christians.
p.1

2
Pope's pastorals &c.
p.1

3
So if, tho' not Christianity,
it be something
better — the circumstance
of it's not coming within
that name, cannot
be classed among temporal
evils — but considering
that this
aberration will be
another reason with
some for getting
rid of this nuisance
what follows, is not
altogether out of place.
p.1

4
For shortness, call
all these declarations,
subscriptions. If the
proposition subscribed
were the words
of Jesus, the opinions
would, as far as the
evangelists are considered
to be correct,
be entitled to the
appellation of Christianity.
p.2.

5
Or if they were the
words of his biographers,
the objection
made above, would
have but little force.
p.2

6
But from the 39 articles,
the words of
Jesus or his biographers,
are studiously
excluded. p.2

§.1. Abstract fitness or §.6. Scoticé
Part Subscriptions antichristian

7
On the face of these
articles, the Church
of England religion
is not the religion
of Jesus, but of the
imposers of the articles
— and it being
almost impossible
to know who they are,
it is the religion of
nobody knows whom.
p.2

8
J. B. to Church rulers.
You who call yourselves
Christians,
would you accept
subscription to articles,
composed of
the words of Jesus?
No indeed — Then
whose is the religion
you adhere to —
not Jesus' but nobody
knows whose. —
p.3

9
"Interpretation" no
excuse — In the mouth
of priests interpretation
means, abrogation
and enactment
Conceditur
there might be
some pretext if the
sacred text were annexed,
but these inferences
are not annexed,
but substituted
to the text.
p.3

10
By the text, the sinister
purposes of our
predecessors would not
be served — therefore
was this substitution
made — By the text,
your sinister purposes
would not be served
— therefore is
the substitution defended.
p.3.
