The causes of the institution
to be looked
for under the head of
mischiefs. In company
with such effects
mischievous to the
subject many, are contemplated
others conducive
to the interest of
the ruling few. p.1

Those things which
produce mischief to
the subject many,
but are productive
to the ruling few of
enough of a particular
good to outweigh
their share in the
common evil or seems
to be so productive,
they will be desirous
to promote. Taking
interest in the largest
sense, so as to include
the pleasure of benevolence
&c, man is
governed by his apparent
interest, by his
real interest in so
far as it coincides
with his apparent

A catalogue of the
mischiefs of forced declarations
of persuasion
brought to
view. Of all these,
there is not one which
it is not the real or
imaginary interest
of the ruling few to
perpetuate. As to
one of the articles,
from the great partial good
which flows from the
general evil, in the

To find the subjects
blind, obsequious,
& patient, is the interest
of the ruling
few — The more depraved
a man's
mind, the more
willingly he will
become a tool in the
hands of the ruling
few — the more distorted
his mind,
the more easily
will he yield himself
up to any delusion.

of the practice in
question are those

few are bound by
