V A
Ch.
§. Harrowby's

1

1
Harrowby's part arduous —
The death of the church
being before his eyes, his
task was to save her from
it by a painful operation
— To this end the
church must be shewn to be in
danger, but if her
ulcers were shewn, even her
enlisted defenders would
turn away in disgust.
p.1

2.
The task too hard for
his Lordship or any one
else — The imprudence
was, in undertaking
the thing at all, not
in the execution of it.
If the patient dies, she
dies of the doctor. p.1

3
For his concessions, every
lover of his country is
indebted to H. viz as to

4
1. Pluralities "unknown
to any church but the English."
p.7 p.2

2. The increase of non-
residence under Scott's
act." p.17. p.2.

3 The procedure allowed
in Scott's act
incompetent — natural
procedure being all
that H. builds his hopes
on. p.2.

4 Immense poverty
from the undue distribution
of the Church
wealth p.13 p.3

5 Learning, character
&c. not connected with
amount of salary. p 15

6 — Fearful responsibility
incurred, if knowing
the evil we remedy it not.
p.14 p
p.3.

7 "Censure falls, if at
all, on the narrowness
and incompetence of the
legislative provisisions"
Per J. B. competent to
H.8th's. purposes —
"The act of H.8. fallen
into disuse through
it's strictness &c"

Per J. B. This an argument
against taking
arrangements of those
days as precedents.

8. Regulations effecting
the reduction of
pluralities and non-residence,
essential to the
existence of the church.
p.4

Swindling and robbery
as fit for "regulation"
as Pluralities and non-
residence —

What become of sinecures
and overpaid
benefices in the mean
time —

Regulation during
incumbent's lives, is
robbery; regulation
instead of abolition after
their death, is robbery
in another shape.

In all the Speech,
not a word about sinecures

To speak ill of Pluralism,
offends applies only
to the 26 Bishops, — speaking
ill of sinecurism,
offends all the world.

The evil of pluralism
is however it's
being a sinecure — Sinecure
the receipt of
public money under
false pretences with
impunity. p.4

9. "On the subject of
allotments to curates,
Bishops opinions will
differ" p.26.

J. B. Yes, & for reasons
not assigned or assignable
without exposure.
This the consequence
of so many independant
despotisms. p.5.

Secus under the Scotch
church — There in cases
open to difference of
opinion, there is division
without factitious
expence &c. & efficient
appeal — But on Curacies
there can be no
difference, as they exist
not — As many griffins
in Scotland as ecclesiastical
sinecurists. p.5.
