of the proposal; are ideas which, besides being groundless would (it can scarce be
necessary to observe to your Lordship) be nothing to the purpose. —
From the quarter alluded to, the alternative would be—approbation with
insult, or insult pure: either would be borne, and borne with chearfullness, for the public
service: but the misfortune is, that the attention requisite would be so apt to be called
off altogether from the proper points to these irrelevent ones.
From that channel I hope I shall stand excused in thus seeking refuge in
another, in which the qualities, requisite to the trying the question on its own merits, are
united with those, by which disapprobation is divested of its harshness, and approbation
rendered doubly valuable.—
The labour, of revising copies, hanging heavy on a time more than fully
occupied, it would be a particular favour, if after making any use of the Paper, which
it may be thought worth while to make of it, in the way of communication, copy,
or extract, and without thinking it necessary to say a syllable on the subject of it, Your
Lordship would have the goodness to let it be returned in the compass of about a week.
