Note to p.3
(a) Instead of appropriation, the term confiscation would
be more expressive. But being infested with the but bearing on its front the
idea of stamp of hardship it would be apt to shock them the many
who are under the dominion of sounds. It carries
with it the idea of b suffering, of suffering
in the way of punishment, and by means of an operation
which even when compl performed for the express purpose of punishment which even in that character is
deservedly an unpopular one: whereas the great recommendation
of the resource in question is that
it would produce, as I shall then presently, no suffering at all.
You would not perhaps care for example to have it
said you had confiscated the possessions of the Clergy:
though that after all is the result, though the word be
exactly expressive of the result though that after all
is exactly what you have done.
