The letter signed Anti MacChiavel See the first page of No. 12b 1789 where Anti M. is introduced. was written at this time. in 1789. It was then
that the armament was setting of out for Russia. George the third had
stimulated Gustavus the mad Swedish King to make war upon
Russia – & when Russia called upon Denmark to fulfil his treaties
with Russia by rendering the assistance stipulated by these treaties/
George the third threatened to make war upon Denmark unless
she violated her engagements – This excited my indignation & I
with that letter which so exasperated the King. Lord Melbourne
found it out by the style – Lady Shelburne discovered me by
her aristocratic tact – I had not been had in the circles of quality.
She was doing something or other to reinstate antique vases
I called them "pitchers" – for they were like resembled in shape the
vessel which I had seen in the picture of Jesus & the woman of
Samaria. She told me mine was a democratic expression –
And in my letter she discovered a phrase she had never before
heard – namely "to run a muck" in the Malay sense – It gave
her disagreeable associations – & she at once accused me of the
