Some of the correspondence of this period (1788) with France
shines light upon the cause of passions which so even
look out in such unprimed fury. Our letter of
the 12th November says – Our great men are exasperating
the people nation by language which cannot but make
them unpopular. One Grand Seigneur & what is
worse one of the people but only in the populace, – a
distinction with which people & populace are sufficiently
exasperated. Our debates are carried on as barbarously
as in the term of Channinagins – our national
character seems opposed to sedate deliberation. We
have no little moderation in our expressions & less logic in
our reasonings. We are too impetuous & too vain
It or a class Any one seeks to display his talent
(esprit) nobody seems to think about entering
conviction. As if we had not enough to do with a
few great & grace matters, only think of picker's
submitting to the Assembly from 50 to 80 questions
any one of which would require an age of time and a Legislature of
scions to solve, – & he says "Answer them all in
