However he was most anxious to escape from barbarous Russia
to reach civilized Europe, and to avail himself of the occasion
Bentham’s departure offered him. At Crichoff money was
not among obtainable things – & the money resources which Bentham
had spent in coming & which had been provided principally by
his Uncle were not to be replenished. Though I never heard
Bentham reproach condemn his brother I fancy the ill-success of
many of his brother's schemes annoyed him – not a little.
There is a correspondence reporting "a semicircular vessel"
comprised of a number of smaller vessels joined at head
& tail forming a sort of procession which was to glide like a snake through the
waters & in which the soldier sailor had promised to convey
the philosopher home – but the experiments failed – &
as in Russia everything depended on exciting surprise
moments his brother's reputation sunk & was only
raised again by his beating the Turks in battle.
