Fordyce
He was was a miserable creature. Theon the whole the coldest of the Scotch cold.
He told me had set me down in his own mind as one
destined to be 'Master of the Rolls' – He approved
he said, of every atom of the Introduction to Morals &
Legislation. He had originality & valued it in others.
In my love of chemistry, it would have been a privilege for
me had Fordyce possessed a chemical apparatus.
Fordyce had lost his chemical apparatus. He had
nothing at all. I has been burnt & what was left
was not worth £10. I should have been supremely
happy to have known anybody who possessed one.
My chamber was spacious. There was a grate & over
the grate a chimney piece – & in one corner a
apart to hold chemical things – I broke a hole through
the wall, (it was not perceived,) & put in a pane of glass to light my closet.
Among the members of the St Paul’s Churchyard Club
to which I belonged with Dr Johnson, was Tasso Hoole. He was one
of Doctor Johnson’s lickspittles. He had I think, a place at
the East India House & got money by plays & translations
which he got people to subscribe for. He even asked me
for subscriptions though he lived in style – asked me who lived
in beggary. He got me to subscribe & Chamberlain
Clark forced him to give back the money again. I
went once to the rehearsal of one of his plays.
