Mr Skinner, a Clergyman who has been mentioned
friend of Benthams father & who was Vicar of the parish of Bishopsgate Christchurch in Monmouthshire but was then serving Bishopsgate, London, close to Bentham's abode was at this in the habit
of encouraging & of connecting the aiding Bentham in his classical studies. At this
period the Rev Mr Archdeacon Lewes had received from the Duchess of
Duchess Dorset a complementary invitation to dinner written
on the back of a playing card, which chanced to be the Ten
hearts – He sent this reply

Your compliment Lady I pray you forbear.
One old English source is much more sincere;
You sent me ten hearts – 'tis the tythe that is mine
Do give me one heart, – and burn t'other

Skinner desired young Bentham to translate this verse
to Latin which he thus rendered

Blauditias, Domina, oro tu as dinette, voluntad
Ista bona angloren veteuven sincerior amplo'est
Pass devina est soturn nili ti bis quinque dedistiCorda;
Unum unaneat cor, flocci cetera fecundo

Mr Skinner however certainly sought to improved on the
translation & wrote beneath it, competition between
them not having been unfrequent

Another piece of of an old smatterer
with his favorite son of the breezes

Bland loquas, Domina, ora ti sepomore voces
Vox Veterum anglorum plus probitatis Labes
Sunt noves Decima - ni corda deum miki mittas
Con unum veni set ; perno novem

Thomas Skinner
