"often had he trampled on his Majesty's process, and
"laughed at his judges — and feels himself still safe
"in treating them with contempt.' No wonder that
"the ends of justice are so often defeated, if, in the
"name of justice, impediments and difficulties, and
"pillaging, are to meet the seeker of justice at
"every step of his progress.

"Another case, hardly less monstrous, has
"just occurred. A question arises; it is not of a
"very serious amount, but is given in favour
"of the plaintiff; and, as the defendant is not "forthcoming with the amount, and resists the levying the
"process, there is an application for an order to
"sequestrate his rents. This would seem all
"fair and striaght enough; when up rise the
"lawyers, and say that notice must be served
"on every individual ryot — the number of
"ryots in this case being 50,000 — and on every notice
"there being a fee of II rupees, or £1 sterling,
"£50,000 an' you please. on which the Judge declares,
"from the Bench, that this is an unavoidable evil."
