J.B. to Herald on Peel and Bentham
Poor Mr Bentham. Unfortunate Mr Bentham! Of this sort
when the measurer measurers are efficient is the measure meted to him.
On this occasion, with comes a blank for his name: on other occasions
with an apology for mentioning it not blanking it. Witness Mr
whom, on the occasion of the Bill for abolishing the , has
Anti-Usury laws it suited the Right Honorable Gentleman's
purpose to make mention of it: it was not often (Honorable House was given to understand) it was not often that the Right Honorable practical men share opinions with the non-honorable theorist.
Mr Brougham was in a little more equally practical, with, and but
somewhat Now then Sir differently prudent from with prudential from Mr
Peel: by him the obnoxious dangerous troublesome name was neither uttered or
nor so much as alluded to. Mr Brougham knew perfectly what he
was about: he knew better things than to create a tread up
oppose his own purposes, by letting slip the dogs of war
and setting them as barking to bark as and yelp in full cry !
Mr Brougham in his silence knew what he was about: he knew well
that this silence was exactly the course which, if asked, Mr Bentham
would have been earnest in recommending to him. But Mr the
Bentham theorist, though this kept under the hatches; is not annihilated: and as the Mr Brougham found the School-master
is abroad, not less abroad is his other Mr Bentham.
found Mr Bentham from whom Mr Peel in addition to what he
has already may have perhaps rather more than
a quite agreable to him. Mr Bentham
