J.B. on Peel to G.B. – Rudimented
In one of the letters printed by the Commissioners in
their report is an account of a suit which ended by the ruin of
both parties. Expence on both sides taken together £500 and
upwards. Subject matter a breach of the width of three foot in
a hedge. Species of suit a replevin. Cattle of one party having
been distrained by the other for damage done in consequence
of the breach that had taken place in the hedge. This was
one example out of so many of the points of special pleading
one of those forms the preservation of which seems to have
been decreed by Mr Peel and if so of course by his Commissioners.
Supposing this to be eventually the case then whosoever he
be who beholds himself plunged in the gulf of ruin or
drawn towards it by special pleading, may behold in the
Right Honorable sham reformer the author of his sufferings;
and and amongst so many other things see why
it is that in relation to this as well as the rest of his designs
his determination was that there should be no
controversy should take place which he could prevent
from coming into existence.
Now suppose for example half the useless
expences cut off and accordingly of those who otherwise
would have been plunged in ruin half the number
saved from it. Well then those whom he left destined
for it from these what thanks for his supposed
reform would be due to him: So much for this half
of the number. Those by the supposition compleatly
ruined they would not be half ruined however
they would continue. So much for the favoured half. objects of this favor

for in that case I should feel myself under the obligation of calling upon the
