Dear Sir,
The enclosed translation of the decree of the
Cortes, is as literal as the language appeared to admit
of its being made — I would have sent it to you on
Sunday —when I made it— but that I was at a loss as
to the precise import of one or two ecclesiastico-technicalities
of expression, & an ambiguity in article 6, about which
I wished to consult Alcalá, whom I could not see till
last night.
From a mistake wither of the copyist or
framer of article 6, it is uncertain whether the 100 Ducats
there spoken of, is to be deducted from or added to, the
pensions of the military orders —Alcala is of opinion
that it has to be added, & I have so rendered it.
The monks of the Benedictine cloisters of Aragon & Catalonia,
are it seems bodies of monks, having the interior economy
of friars, which is the reason of their being specially
mentioned.
I learn at Shirley's carpet warehouse, that the
whole stack had been disposed of before his bankruptcy,
with the exception of a few remnants— You will therefore
not be able to supply yourself from that quarter.
Most respectfully yours
WELaurence
