1820 Sept.3 (.24)
Emancipation Spanish

Edward Blaquiere Esqr. to J.B. Aug. 22d. no place.

I omitted in last letter to inform you that in the sitting of the 12th
instant, the commissions of legislation and finance, had made their report on the
papers which had been submitted to them, relative to the re-establishment of the
society of Jesus during the reign of terror: and of their recommending an immediate
revocation of the decree— It now affords me very sincere pleasure to say
that the fate of that body is decided (I trust for ever) in Spain. The Cortes have
decreed their total suppression; those individuals of the society who are native
Spaniards will be permitted to remain in the Peninsula and allowed a pension
of 3300 Reals per annum, the rest are to quit the Kingdom. Their property
which is immense, will return from whence it came, into the pockets of the
people, and be forthwith appropriated to the payment of the national debt.—
This is a grand measure and will as the Editor of the Constitucional justly
observes, cause a great sensation in Spain, where he says, the return of the
Jesuits was regarded with that species of cold indignation, which similar acts of
despotism inspired in former days. In Rome it will be considered as a real
calamity. Not only does it withdraw one yearly contribution of 40,000 dollars
from that country, but destroys at once the most powerful means possessed by
the Holy See of perpetuating its influence over the Cabinets of Europe.....

Amongst the measures for liquidating the public debt there is one which
deserves notice; a list of all the lands and houses possessed by the Inquisition has
just been published, and the whole are to be sold by public Auction without loss of
time— a very interesting discussion has taken place, relative to a famous religious
tax called la Santa Cruzada— The list of pensions paid out of it, has been laid
before the Congress— at the head of this there is an item of 15000 dollars pr.ann.
paid to the Church of S<hi rend="underline">t</hi> Peters at Rome. The forgoing is a fair specimen of
the whole.
