J.B. To Mora

Amidst all my cares for Spain and Portugal and Naples, you will
not neither expect nor wish me to be insensible to the interests of my own
country in this respect. I believe it may be said with too
much truth that the progress of the cause of the people
and liberalism in general is to scarcely so in such good
advance with us as with you. By So illustrious and compleat
a disproof of the imputation of Jacobinism and
no small addition would be made to whatever influence my
name at present operates with in support of the cause of the
subject many against the ruling few. At no great distance of
time after my Death, England might if it commenced
with Spain in my life time be added to the number of the
nations the for whom in the main features one common
code alike known to all would serve. The character which
I have had the good fortune to bear in private life has preserved
my person an writings as well as my personality in a considerable
degree from that vituperation which is so copiously
bestowed upon some of our eminent political writers
who in this respect are less fortunate. But the eminence to
which I should be raised by such a commission from Spain
would render it an object of more importance to our rulers corruptionists
amid the most of all sorts and sizes to exert
all their powers and risk every thing for the purpose of rendering
my works an object of the greatest possible fear hatred and
apprehension: but against all whatever mischief might otherwise
be done, an assurance such as that proposed would
be a most powerful shield. Of its importance in every
point of view so strong is my conviction, that should it
so happen that in pursuance of the arrangement concocted amongst
my Madrid friends an invitation from Government and
as that above proposed should reach me, I shall probably deem
it advisable to forbear answer send any answer to it or and at some
rate giving any publicity to it here unless till it had become certain that a
one, with the clause
in question contained
in it was will not be
sent.
