J.B. To Mora
To this purpose belongs another an odd incident which
the came across me to a day or two ago. The Quarterly When my work
intituled Church of Englandism &c examined came out a most furiously anti-liberal, corruptionist, bigotry-professing,
monarchist, aristocratical publication – the Quarterly Review – made a most furious
attack upon it – confining itself however to vague generalities
and not attempting to controvert a single statement in it,
though the corruption of what that the establishment in question
is composed are exposed in the interest detail from authentic
sources and by incontrovertible proofs. This same Review
as you probably know is a Tory periodical set up in
opposition to the advance of Whigism: the Edinburgh Review
and by its superiority in some respects is has been thought to have nearly
equalled it in extent of , if not surpassed it.
All abuse of Abuse in every shape it has been a strenuous supporter
of, abuse in every shape of course a proportionally vehement
enemy. To Now observe what of has just now taken place.
I have a friend and disciple at the Bar who goes all lengths
with me in favour of the cause of the people, and who has a friend
at the Bar, whose a who in whose mind ambition aided by strong talents of operating with in common force he sets out with the resolution to make the
most of his talents by the obsequiousness to the ruling powers
but at the same time is by no means insensible to
the abuses of the law, though looking apt all such the habit
of regarding the matter in its true point of view as tending to
the prejudice of his ambitious projects: he has accordingly been in
the habit of keeping his eyes shut as close as possible against
every such unpleasant spectacle. This man has just now been
engaged by the Quarterly Review to make in every number of it
a regular attack upon some portion or other of the legal system
and for his text book he has taken by my work on the Judicial
Establishment, and proposes to go through with it: and the
work not being on sale and but a very few copies left, my friend obtained
from me on Sunday last a copy for his friend to keep and employ for
that purpose. As to my name work I not only merely consented but desired that
no reference should ever be made to it: by any such reference a multitude
of readers would
have been scared, and
whatever good might
otherwise be done among
those who are at present
anti-liberalists, lessened.
