1820 Nov. 17
On Friday the 9 8th when it was that M. de Colomb promised
to my young man that whenever a Courier was sent by the
Embassy from home he would give one notice: such a
thing might happen he said in two days from that time: if
not then it might happen in twelve days: if not then, in about
a months. It is therefore by the post that this letter must go,
or else wait for an indefinite time. What I have in view at
present is – to send to him to request the favour of a visit: and if
he comes to shew him those works printed papers that I have of my Brothers
that from which he sees of the head of the several divisions he
may form a provisional judgment whether it be worth while
to give any additional promptitude or certainty to departure
of the Courier: for as France is circumstanced it would would
be scarcely advisable to trust such a work to the post, it
would be too interesting not to draw attention and be stopt.
But though I shew it to him I will not deliver it to him but
under cover to you as before, taking his promise that it shall
go in that state without being and not be sent directly to the
any Minister such as the Minister of the Union or the Minister of Foreign Affairs,
for I could not and would not carry on any negotiation about
the matter but through your hands: I shoul and as M. de
Colomb is your friend then he could not have any object as to
were it only with a view to the public service. I should hope
that in some shape or other you might find some for
all the time and labour which this part of the business will unavoidably
cost you. I have written on this subject more than double the
quantity contained in this half sheet. I could not trust it without
the printed proofs which were the main subject of it: the expectation
entertained would appear extravagant.
You will understand that my Brother is not privy to any
dispatches of mine to make any such use of the quondam official papers:
they happen to be in my custody, and the deed is mine. The
constititued authorities have
not signified to with
me or to my Brother
any desire on their part
that any of these papers
should be kept secret
and if they had I should not
take any regard to it. I have but just room to tell you what I have in view is – so to order matters that in his portion of the field of art and
science the singularly extensive and various services which he will be capable of rendering, shd. be rendered to Spain, and
on the same gratuitous
terms as mine. But circumstanced as he is, my expectations are not very sanguine.
