To Mora

My bro Brother escaped unhurt: he lost but few men, the Turkish shot flew mostly over
his head. On board his own boat a number of men were
killed at the same time behind him as well as on each side of him
it was by the bursting of a 36 pounder on board his own vessel.
Without any pr opportunity of previous examination to fit out his
vessels he was obliged to take up with such whatever guns the
place Cherson happened to afford, and apply this as he
could to vessels that were not destined for the reception of guns.
A few days before a Council of war was held between Army
and Navy: present the then already celebrated General Savaroff,
my Brother, and nobody else. Savaroffs behaviour
was like that of a and not in his dosage. He
began and ended with a tirade composed of aphorisms
in the stile of Judge , shewing out good things
fortitude and prudence were and how great the need of them
was, nothing prepared, nothing else said. My Brothers right
hand man was an Englishman of the name of Upsal, Mate
on board a Merchant ship which in the breaking out of the war
had been embargoed at Constantinople. Upsal got a decontinuance
in the service: afterwards, when my Brother was made Inspector
General of Naval works here, he became a Clerk in his
office. He is still living: in good circumstances – comfortable for
rendered comfortable in his circumstances by marriage with a
woman not long since dead: he is still living near Baldock in
Lincolnshire: a convert to the cause of the people: a good
humanoid and practical philanthropist – a model of that
social virtue, which happily in the middle orders is as common as
among the higher it is rare. not to be At the time of the action
the Russians had I believe a few men on shore in rank and
file. Upsal told me saw a little line of them 8 or 10 I believe of them in a line
there were lose all their legs in the same place by one chance shot
from the Turks. Surgeons or medicines there were none: the brandy
there was: the stirrups were bound up with handkerchiefs: the patients
did not seem to mind it much: but they called with one voice for brandy,
and this brandy they were plied with, till they died. Upsal being in told me this at the house
a few months
ago. At my request
he promised me a letter
giving an account of
that business: but his
pen is not a fluent one,
and he has not yet
performed his promise.
