J.B. to Mora

V. VI. Rural economy Natural sources of national wealth – Making the most of the natural
resources of the country in every branch – to be whatsoever they
may be more particularly rural economy which he has been
studying for the purpose of the an Estate at of 2,400 Acres f for
the purchase of which he has just agreed. Mineralogy
and the new science of Geology he has not of late had
much occasion to pay attention to, though in his early years
in the course of his travels through the Russian Empire he
made collected and such became a large collection of minerals from
the mines he visited with a view to the making of improvements
in the manner in which the business was conducted.

In the art of road-making very extraordinary and unexpected
improvements have very lately been made here in
England and are practising with success as appears by
recent Reports of Committees of the House of Commons.
These of course, in so far as applicable in the several parts
of Spain he would be as able as I am here, he could
be willing to make the most of.

The great objection to the use of fossil coal viz.
the injury to the atmosphere by the smoke has very lately been
removed in the country the success of which has been ascertained and made
known by the Report of a Committee of the House of Commons.

Prodigious are the improvements that of late years have been
made in rural economy in England and Scotland. From
£4 between £4000 and £5000 a year or less I think it is Mr
Coke of Norfolk Member of the House of Commons has in about 40 years raised the value rental of
his Estate there to about £40,000: and at the same time
numerous Tenants have enriched themselves under him
and now live in elegant Houses, built either by themselves
or by him, out of the profits of the Estate. Well thought of this. I
will send you a short but most interesting account of this creation
by an intimate of that intelligent and fortunate propriety. If
translated it may operate
as a stimulus to some
of your great land proprietors.
Cokes
